When I moved to England back during the summer of 2003 for an internship at the British Parliament , I knew I wanted to meet people and by meeting people I mean not going to the club. I wanted to go to social events to socialize and when I searched on the internet what to do ,and the first thing that came up was Polo.
I knew about polo for many years because of where I grew up in Michigan. I have always had a love for horses and attended horse camps during the summer when I was a kid and sometimes at the horse camps, I learned a bit about the sport.
When I went to my first polo event in England, I went to Beaufort Polo Club, owned by the Tomlinsons...a wonderful family! I met all of them, including one of the children, who is about my age, I had a crush on. When I went there, it was a charity match, called The Chakravarty Cup and from there on, I met Dev, who is now my life-long friend. His parents started the cup back in 1997. His father was a patron of The Prince's Trust and the cup was named after Dev's father, Saroj Chakravarty.
For those who do not know what it is, it is an annual event created to raise funds and sponsorships for the charities supported by The Royal Family. HRH The Prince of Wales took part for the first nine years and has now retired, but Prince William and Prince Harry have now taken over and they are the Royal Patrons of the Charities which normally benefit from this event.
When I went there back in 2003 and 2004, I did meet Prince Charles and Prince William. I thought they were nice, funny, interesting people to talk to ---- type of people you could hold on a good conversation for hours with.
The Chakravarty Cup has become popular in the recent years, not because of Prince William / Prince Harry and Prince Charles playing polo, it has become popular from the celebrities who attended there, such as Twilight's Robert Pattinson, Richard E Grant, Jerry Hall. Prince Rashid bin El Hassan of Jordan and many more.
Sadly this year, Prince Harry, Prince William and his new wife Kate Middleton won't be attending this fantastic event due to engagements already set up. It is pretty sad because they played in it for a number of years and personally I think they should participate in it. It is a fun event that raises money for charities. Wills and Harry are older now and it seems that they have moved on to bigger and better things. Maybe next year they will do it.
The good news is that this year the band The Faces (Ronnie Wood, Mick Hucknhall, Kenney Jones, Ian Mclagan, Glen Matlock). People attend this event because it is for a good cause!
This is an even that people should attend! I loved attending it when I lived in England because of the sport and the people you meet. Want to know more about it? Want to attend the event? Read about how to do it below:

When I visited Scotland for the first time, I went to Edinburgh, did the Royal Mile, took a history tour of Mary King's Close and then was told on my last night there to go to the Last Drop Pub, located on the Grassmarket in Edinburgh.
I went there, ordered their warm whisky (not a fan, although I do like my whisky..just not warm), and learned the history of the place.
The history goes like this: When men were going to be sentenced to hang for whatever crimes they did (such as stealing bread), they would go to the Last Pub, to get their last meal while the gallows were being prepared. And before they were killed, they were given one last whisky...for the road to heaven.
In fact, Sir Walter Scott, a Scottish writer talked about it:
"It was the custom, until within these thirty years or thereabouts, to use this esplanade for the scene of public executions. The fatal day was announced to the public by the appearance of a huge black gallows-tree towards the eastern end of the Grassmarket. This ill-omened apparition was of great height, with a scaffold surrounding it, and a double ladder placed against it, for the ascent of the unhappy criminal and executioner. As this apparatus was always arranged before dawn, it seemed as if the gallows had grown out of the earth in the course of one night, like the production of some foul demon; and I well remember the fright with which the schoolboys, when I was one of their number, used to regard these ominous signs of deadly preparation. On the night after the execution the gallows again disappeared, and was conveyed in silence and darkness to the place where it was usually deposited, which was one of the vaults under the Parliament House, or courts of justice."
It is a must see place. Sure you can see the famous castle but there is more to history than an old beautiful castle!
